When you go camping, you do it to save money, and the food is expensive. But you can make do with cooking using the camping stove, which allows you to cook both ready-to-eat and dehydrated food, as well as a very normal pasta, but let’s see what camping products we are talking about.

Camping Gas Cooker

There are many camping stoves on the market, all good, all more or less easy to use or resistant, with good value for money. First of all it is necessary to choose a gas cooker with the right capacity for our needs. A personal camping stove will be suitable for simple personal use.

A camping gas cooker, used to make a coffee a day and to heat a couple of dehydrated foods a day, will generally last for a week, although you need to calculate how much water it heats, the presence of wind that weakens the flame and makes the cylinder consume gas, the type of gas mixture you use and so on.

Not all gas cylinders in the stove are the same, in fact there are two types mostly: one has butane gas but is not suitable for too cold climates because you would risk finding the cylinder and its interior frozen. The second type of gas is a mixture of butane and propane that instead do not freeze and can give a flow of gas useful to have a flame suitable for cooking even in the middle of the ice.

Unless you have to face trekking in high mountains with snow and ice, butane gas canisters will usually be enough. Both types of gas canisters are good for camping gas cookers. There is another consideration to be made about gas cylinders, in fact, there are two types: the reusable cylinders from which the gas cooker attacks are unhooked and stored until the next use. The non-reusable gas cylinders which, once punctured, must be consumed until the end.

As you can see, portable camping stoves with non-reusable gas canisters have an attack that pierces the cylinder and does not allow you to remove the attack until the gas is finished, otherwise it would come out under pressure. The other models, on the other hand, have a safety valve that blocks the gas once the actual camping stove is removed.

But there are also camping kitchens, which are not good for trekking as they would be too bulky and heavy to carry on foot.

They are used purely as a portable home kitchen and consist of a much larger gas cylinder than the first ones, with a hob with even more burners, depending on how much you want to spend. Usually these camping gas cookers are for when you need to cook for more people, families or small groups of people.

Here the gas that you use is preferably LPG so you need to go to authorized dealers. The duration of the gas cylinder is much longer than the first described, as well as the kitchen service much more professional, being able to cook as at home, always choosing a hob appropriate to your needs.

To heat up some drinks or try to heat pre-cooked or freeze-dried food for those who make camping a little more pushed, you can also consider alcohol cookers. Alcohol cookers are very small and are not used for cooking, but only to heat a food or drink.

In my opinion they are not good because there is always the danger that they open in the backpack and personally I was a victim of such an occasion… it would smell of alcohol and it might be necessary to throw away some objects that are easily impregnated with chemical agents such as alcohol or gasoline.
